The Government's Film Division is the pioneer agency in Sri Lanka of recreation of socio-cultural and economic events through audio-visual media. It is the only government institution that recreates the socio-political culture events that took place in this country from 1948 up to now through audio-visual media and preserves them for the future, especially through the creation of documentary programs and newsreels. Although, recreation was made through the medium of films in the early days, at present it is the only government institution that creates audio visual programs including documentary programs and newsreels trough the digital audio media incorporating new technologies.

Carrying out preservation tasks and related tasks of film documentaries and newsreels produced by the Government Film Unit

Videos and photos related to old and new audio visual media are preserved and accessed in a secure manner for future usage.

Post-production functions of the Government Film Unit are performed. While conservation documentary programs and other video programs and performing multi-camera productions that are relevant to the live media discussions, news, and other programs are released to the media institutions and persons engaged in media-related activities through the internet.

The Government Film Unit has started the Film Camera Unit around in 1948 period. Since then, video technology has been used for the documentary programs produced by this institution.

Producing and directing the programs to overall production process through the planning research and coordinating activities conducting pre- production, production, post-productions for the documentary programs.

Photographs are obtained covering all important festivals and events, foreign conferences relevant to foreign heads of state, and diplomatic affairs related the president and the government. Photographs, development photographs, artistic photographs and various other photographs are taken which will enhance the image of Sri Lanka.

This unit performs the sound production for news and documentaries, semi-narrative films and discussion programs, and recording and controlling of sound relevant to these productions. The films, videos, and other audiovisual presentations are screened in the main auditorium.
